Stamping - 5 Basic Tips
  • For new ‘Stamper's' start with stamps which can be used in a multitude of ways, you don't need to rush in and buy everything at once but gradually add more stamps and accessories as your enthusium grows.
  • Always purchase quality stamps from known and established manufacturers and/or their authorized distributors. Most quality stamps have the design index illustrated on top of the hardwood maple block and these usually have contoured sides for comfortable and steady handling allowing the etched, rubber dies to provide a crisp, clear stamped image.
  • 5 Simple Tips To Make The Perfect Impression
  • Ensure you work on a flat and solid surface to stamp on. Several pieces of paper or some thin card to provide protection to your stamping surface and padding for your stamping image. Craft and card/games tables can depress/sag when pressure is applied to your stamp. This may cause problems stamping a clear unbroken image on larger projects.

  • Press the stamp firmly onto the stamp pad. (Do not worry if it may take several attempts to gauge the correct amount of ink - practice makes perfect) Large stamps can be inked easily on the raised pads by moving them over the surface. You may prefer to lay the stamp face up on the table and apply the pad to the stamp. Both methods are effective and down to your personal choice and comfort. Check the stamp is well inked by viewing its surface. If there are areas that appear "dry," you need to ink the stamp again. New stamps can require a breaking in period before the ink is applied evenly.

  • Always use even pressure to the stamp. Never roll the stamp or apply excessive pressure. Unless this is your deliberate intention such use will cause over stamping or blurring of the image.

  • Larger stamps and stamps with solid areas will require more ink and more pressure. Apply even pressure to entire area using fingertips, but not allowing the stamp to move. For large stamps or designs with a lot of filled in areas, more pressure can be applied if you stamp standing up or by adding padding under the item your are stamping.

  • Small stamps and fine line designs require less ink and less pressure.

Experiment, Enjoy and get hooked on stamping!
